Research Fields at the

Weizmann School of Science

Life Sciences

Life Sciences research at the Weizmann Institute of Science is committed to unraveling the intricacies of life – from the molecular level to organism behavior and understanding disease mechanisms. Our research spans a variety of fields, including molecular biology, development, neurobiology, immunology, and plant sciences, using advanced technologies such as electron microscopy, genomic sequencing, multi-omics, and computational analyses. The goal is to decipher these mechanisms and contribute to innovative treatments for a range of diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative, autoimmune, and metabolic disorders.

Physics

Explore the laws of the universe, from particle physics to the cosmos, delve into fields such as quantum computing, astrophysics, and biophysics, work with state-of-the-art equipment, and participate in international projects related to discoveries in the fields of gravitational waves and the study of dark matter.

Mathematics and Computer Science

Study theoretical mathematics in areas such as geometry, algebra, analysis, and probability, alongside applied mathematics and theoretical computer Science – ranging from the development of theories that challenge the boundaries of cryptography and complexity theory, to the realms of algorithms and quantum computing. Expand the boundaries of knowledge by integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics, while fostering multidisciplinary collaboration in cutting-edge research.

Chemistry

Understanding the world on an atomic level through advanced methods in optics, magnetic resonance, and biophysics, while integrating fields such as computational chemistry and quantum mechanics, earth sciences, and structural chemistry and biology. The faculty comprises four departments: Chemical and Biological Physics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Molecular Chemistry and Materials Science, and Chemical and Structural Biology – with more than 60 dynamic research groups.

Science Teaching Department

A central goal of the Science Teaching Department is to shape the future of science and mathematics education both locally and globally, by developing academic and practical leadership. Research in the department focuses on the development and implementation of advanced teaching, learning, and assessment materials, as well as the professional development of teachers. The department influences education policy through leading steering committees and professional committees for the Ministry of Education and other organizations worldwide. The department leads a variety of projects, including personalized learning initiatives, the integration of AI technologies in education, STEM integration, and the promotion of teacher communities.
